Stop Child Abuse!

Does the name Nurin Jazlin rings any bells? She was an eight year old girl who was abducted then sexually abused and brutally murdered in 2007. She was found on the morning of September 17, 2007,with a cucumber and a brinjal found stuffed inside her genitals and had caused her rectum to rupture. This news was once spread countrywide and I believed it must have brought grief to all the readers. So do you remember now? How about the five years old Sharlinie Mohd Nashar who was abducted and is still no where to be found after several years?

And there's actually many other cases which were left with a question mark, unsolved. These kind of cases are certainly no longer something new to us and the sad part is these cases have been increasing year by year and getting more serious; according to Social Welfare Department of Malaysia indicated each year at least 1,000 children in Malaysia are reported as victims of child abuse, molestation and rape. With high statistics of child abuse, children rights are obviously taken away and they also loose their opportunity to live healthy and happily.
Child abuse can be defined as intended or unintended harm to a child by another person who may be parents, relatives or guardians. Tragically, children experience violence in all spaces most familiar to them: in homes, schools, parks and communities they live in. They also suffer abuse and exploitation even in orphanages, on streets, in the workplace, in cyberspace as well as in places of detention which means EVERYWHERE!
Acts of child abuse that I would never want to see to happen again;
  • Violence against children. Be it physically, sexually or emotionally. However, violence against children is often ignored and perpetrated with impunity.
  • Child trafficking. Children are trafficked for a variety of purposes, including for bonded and exploitative labour, begging, sexual exploitation, illegal adoption and child marriage.
  • Commercial sexual exploitation of children/Child prostitution. Local and foreign demand fuels the commercial sexual exploitation of children as young as 5 years old to satisfy to lust and financial benefit of numerous heartless beasts out there. The growing use of new technologies, including the Internet, has made it easier as well to promote sex tourism, lure children, and disseminate child pornography across the globe. Just so you know, in Cambodia, it has been estimated that about a third of all prostitutes are under 18 and in Thailand,the exact number of child-prostitutes in Thailand is not known, but Thailand’s Health System Research Institute reports that children in prostitution make up 40% of prostitutes in Thailand.
  • Verbal abuse. Verbal abuse is still abuse. It’s a type of abuse in the form of words. They still burn, sting, hurt and put children in danger. Don’t assume that a few hurtful words won’t cause them their life. Don’t assume that just because you haven’t put one finger on them, you’re not responsible for what happens after that. Mentally and emotionally, they are bruising, bleeding, suffocating. It could include name-calling, ridicule, degradation, excessive criticism, inappropriate or excessive demands, and routine labeling or humiliation.
    All children are born to grow, to develop, to live, to love, and to articulate their needs and feelings for their self-protection. I personally don't dare to search or even post photos of abused children cause they made my eyes teary and heartbroken. These innocent children certainly deserve a safe and protected life for a brighter and colourful future because they are the generations that will be the hope and leaders of our country in the future. By just merely raising your hands and say no to child abuse are merely not enough cause actions speak louder than words (; Do show your support and be the voice of those who cannot speak up. Don't hesitate to call 15999 immediately to report as well if you suspected is are being abused.
    In the U.S.A., a Blue Ribbon Campaign against child abuse originated in the spring of 1989 when Bonnie Finney of Virginia tied a blue ribbon to her car antenna, as tribute to her three year old grandson, Michael Bubba Dickinson, who died at the hands of his abusive father. The blue color of the ribbon symbolizes the color of bruises. (Source: here)
    Now that I've done my part, so how bout you? (;
